Spain: Juan Carlos to Skip Felipe's Swearing-in
Madrid (AFP) - Spain's King Juan Carlos will skip the swearing-in of his son Felipe as his successor on June 19 so as not to grab attention from him, the palace said Thursday.
Dogged over recent years by scandals and health problems, Juan Carlos is abdicating in favour of his more popular son, after a historic four-decade reign.
Felipe, 46, will be sworn in by parliament accompanied by his wife Letizia, their two daughters Leonor, eight, and Sofia, seven, and his mother Queen Sofia, a palace spokesman told AFP.
"King Juan Carlos will not attend, so as to give more prominence to the new king," the spokesman said.
He added that the king was expected to join Felipe afterwards on the balcony of the royal palace to wave to the crowds.
Felipe's eldest sister Elena and his aunts Pilar and Margarita will attend the swearing-in at the lower house of parliament, he added.
After being sworn in at the Congress in central Madrid, Felipe and Letizia will then be driven to the old royal palace in the west of the capital for a reception, the royal spokesman said. But the king's youngest daughter Cristina was not on the list. She has been caught up in a corruption scandal centred on her husband, former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin.
- Tight security -
Authorities announced tight security measures for the swearing-in.
The interior ministry said in a statement it had raised its terrorism alert level from grade two to three, out of four, as a "proportionate response" to the importance of the occasion.
The speaker of the house, Jesus Posada, said the swearing-in was expected to happen around 10:30 am (0830 GMT) on June 19.As well as the royals, the ceremony will gather Spain's full government, deputies and senators, but no foreign dignitaries.
Felipe will take hold of the crown and sceptre but unlike for Juan Carlos's own swearing-in on November 22, 1975, there will be no religious ceremony.

Monaco: Prince Albert Loses Lawsuit
Strasbourg (France) (AFP) - Europe's top rights court ruled Thursday that French magazine Paris Match was wrongly convicted in 2005 for revealing Monaco's Prince Albert II had a love child with a stewardess.
A court near Paris found in June 2005 that the prince's right to privacy had been violated by the 10-page spread, and sentenced the weekly to 50,000 euros in damages ($60,000 at the time) and also asked Paris Match and its owner Hachette Filipacchi to pay 4,000 euros in court costs.
A month later, Prince Albert admitted that he was the father of a baby boy born out of wedlock to French-Togolese flight attendant Nicole Coste.
The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights ruled that the judgement "breached the magazine's freedom of expression."
"The court found that the public had a legitimate interest in knowing of the child's existence and being able to conduct a debate on the possible implications for political life in the principality of Monaco," it said.
"The court concluded that, in disclosing the information, (Coste) had sought to secure public recognition of her son's status and of the fact that the prince was his father, which were crucial factors in ending the secrecy surrounding him."

The Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. the Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, has sent letters to King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and to his heir, Felipe, Prince of the Asturias, who will ascend the throne after the abdication of his father. In her letter to His Majesty, Her Imperial Highness expressed her deep emotion at learning of his decision and her conviction that the manner in which he had vowed his life from an early age and had dedicated himself to Spain “will forever remain an example for all future generations.”
The Grand Duchess has noted that, in taking the decision to pass the throne to his son, King Juan Carlos I acted solely in the interests of Spain and its people, having carefully considered this historic step and taking into account Spanish traditions and the modern realities.

UK: The Queen and WW2
PARIS (AP) — Though Queen Elizabeth II has cut back on making foreign trips, the 88-year-old British monarch traveled to France for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. And it's little wonder: she lived and lost through World War II and it marked her life more than many.
Here are some reasons why World War II marked Queen Elizabeth so much:On a three-day state visit to France, she and her husband Prince Philip on Friday commemorated the landings at Sword Beach in Normandy, after having spent Thursday in Paris attending a British Embassy garden party, and laying a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe.

HER PARENTS WERE NEARLY KILLED
Her father, King George VI and the Queen Mother, narrowly escaped being killed by a German air raid when Elizabeth was a teenager.
A Luftwaffe plane flew straight down the Mall in September 1940 and dropped bombs on the Buckingham Palace grounds that exploded in great columns of smoke and caused the queen's parents to leap for their lives.
The Queen Mother, whose knees knocked for two minutes, wrote to her mother-in-law the same day evoking the "unmistakable whirr-whirr of a German plane" and then the "scream of a bomb," according to official biographer William Shawcross, who published the letter.
Several servants were injured and the palace chapel was hit.

HER UNCLE WAS KILLED
Prince George, Duke of Kent — King George VI's younger brother — died in a military plane crash on a mission to Iceland in 1942.
The death of Elizabeth's 39-year-old uncle shook the royal family, its only casualty during World War II. It also marked the first death in active service of a British royal in about 500 years. The Duchess of Kent had just given birth to their third child only six weeks earlier.
