Lady Brabourne Receives The Queen's Support

Royals rally round Lady Brabourne after husband abandons her for life in Bahamas with widow of baronet

When Penny Brabourne is seen in the company of a member of the Royal Family, it is usually Prince Philip who is by her side.

The closeness of their friendship has dated back more than 15 years, in which time she has become the nearest thing Philip has to a female confidante.

She is, after all, his regular carriage-driving companion, and the two used to compete together in four-in-hand championships all over the country.

But yesterday Lady Brabourne was in the company of the Queen as she shared a back seat with Her Majesty to attend divine service at the parish church at Sandringham, where Penny, 57, has been staying for the weekend.

Where William Met Kate

Visiting the Scottish coastal town of 17,000, or the University with its 7,700 students, you would not immediately think of St. Andrews as the backdrop for red hot romance. The medieval city is bleak, gray, cold and rainy. At the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, golfers hang onto their hats in the chilly wind and try to avoid hitting balls into the open sea. The buildings are old, gray and distinguished. Founded in 1413, St. Andrews is Scotland's most ancient university, with the slogan: "From first to foremost."

Nowadays St. Andrews is a research university with high rankings, including top-of-the-chart scores for student satisfaction. No wonder the English gentry go there to study and find their spouses. It was a natural choice for Prince William, in part because its remoteness made it easier to protect him. The bright daughter of an ambitious business couple, Kate Middleton also gravitated there. Nearly the same age, both entered in 2001.

Aristocratic Row in Spain...

Spanish aristocrats row over rights of succession

Noble families feud over law abolishing male primogeniture
    King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia

Male primogeniture survives in the royal family of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. But even though the king's oldest child is a daughter, he has made it clear that the rebels do not have his support. Photograph: Daniel Ochoa De Olza/Associated Press For centuries Spain's senior aristocrats, the grandees, ruled in feudal glory but a recent split in their governing body reveals they can no longer run even themselves. A faction of grandees and nobles have walked out of the Deputation of the Grandees, the body that has represented them for the past two centuries, as tempers fray over changes to the rules governing the way titles are handed down. "There is a split. Some of the oldest families are involved," said one of their leaders, the count of Bilbao, who did not want to give names. At the root of the rebels' decision to abandon the governing body lies a 2006 law that abolished male primogeniture. Titles must now be passed down the eldest child, regardless of sex. "I don't think it is fair that my son, who grew up expecting the title, should not get it," said the count. "My daughters don't want the title, but there are three of them and they are all older." The count complained that the Deputation of the Grandees, which unites 900 of the country's 2,300 titled aristocrats and acts as a consultant body to the interior ministry, has done nothing to defend inheritance by primogeniture laid down in the individual charters for each title. The Worcesters...An Exercise in Farming

The Maverick Marchioness

By BRUCE PALLING

Next month, the European Parliament will get down to discussing a number of animal-welfare issues, especially concerning cruel methods such as battery production for hens and the use of small cages for pregnant pigs. The legislation to outlaw these practices is already on the statute books of some countries, but not all member states are vigilant.
Political parties aren't the only institutions pressing these issues —one of the most determined campaigners in Britain is a very vocal English aristocrat and activist called Tracy Worcester.

The 52-year-old Marchioness of Worcester has gained both fame and notoriety for her championing of Green causes, especially her opposition to the farming of pigs in Eastern Europe by giant corporations. Her 2009 documentary "Pig Business," highlights the health and environmental issues caused by factory farms in Poland and elsewhere. The last time I saw her in activist mode was at the Slow Food Congress in Turin last October, where she had set up a stall and buttonholed officials while wearing a billboard on her back advertising her documentary.

Is Romania Better Off with a Monarchy...

From the Bucharest Herald...

Famous actor Ion Caramitru believes that the former King of Romania was the only personality capable of restoring morality in the country and speaks about the toxicity of “turncoat communists” and of the former secret police officers who got into business. In an interview with ‘Adevarul,’ the manager of the Bucharest National Theater says he did not abandon his attitude of social militant, though he stays away from politics today. Caramitru still believes in the political principles of Christian Democracy to restore the monarchy and increase the respect for religion.
“I am sad! For the last 20 years, King Michael I has been in the country… The monarchy could have become perfectly stable during all these years and we could have banished communism forever, by annulling the abdication of 1947, when the King was rudely forced to leave the country. The return to monarchy would have put an end to this fight over the first position in the state, for a president who has discretionary powers. This semi-absolute power could divert the state to other ends, while monarchy secures the first position in the states only in a symbolic manner… Monarchy was the only principle capable of restoring morality in the country. Without it, what did we do? We have the same communists, now turncoats, and the former secret police officers who got into business and obtained revolutionist’s certificates. The infamous people controlling us in the past are doing the same today. The country is dying and everything was stolen,” Ion Caramitru said.

A Bridesmaid Remembers – India Hicks on Diana's Big Day!

Princess Margaret in her nightie, sweets from the Queen of Tonga and Diana singing Just One Cornetto! A royal bridesmaid's VERY surprising big day

By India Hicks

As details about William and Kate’s wedding emerge, it’s brought the memories flooding back for India Hicks, who 30 years ago was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding of Charles and Diana. So what really went on behind the scenes? Here, she gives a peek behind the royal veil . . .

Even now, I’m always asked about the first time I met Diana. What was she like? Did she seem very young? How did I feel? The terrible truth is I just can’t remember.

But what I do remember is the moment I was asked to be a bridesmaid. I was on holiday in the Bahamas when a call came through from the Prince of Wales, my godfather. I was horrified. I was going to have to wear a dress. I was 13.

I had been a bridesmaid before. In fact, I was virtually a professional at it. I’d been one for the Duke of Westminster, Lady Joanna Knatchbull, Lord and Lady Romsey, my nanny — and all of them entailed wearing awful dresses. I was a tomboy, never out of my jodhpurs.

Last Birthday as a Commoner – Kate Middleton

LONDON – Prince William's fiancee was on Sunday celebrating her last birthday before she officially becomes British royalty.

Royal officials said this week that Kate Middleton would be marking her 29th birthday privately, giving no further details.

Still, the event gave the nation's media a chance to talk about the princess in waiting. So too did fresh pictures of Middleton attending a wedding — this one of her friends Harry Aubrey-Fletcher and Louise Stourton, held on Saturday in the northern England village of Aldborough.

The bride-to-be wore black, sporting a velvety topcoat over a black dress and a black pillbox hat. Prince William, who also attended, wore a traditional dark morning suit, and managed to joke with photographers after the ceremony.

"Hello, hello," he said, jumping onto the sidewalk amid the camera flashes. "It's not my wedding yet."
