Prince Philip – Celebrating Ninety Years

Prince Philip was born on 10 June 1921 on the Mediterranean island of Corfu. The great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria, and a Prince of Greece and Denmark, he was the youngest of five children and the only son of Prince and Princess Andrew of Greece. After attending schools in France, Germany and Britain, he joined the British Royal Navy, where he served with distinction during the Second World War. On returning from his duties with the British Pacific Fleet in 1946, his naval career continued, and his relationship with his third cousin, Princess Elizabeth, elder daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, grew.

In February 1947, Prince Philip became a naturalised British subject, renouncing his royal title and taking the name Philip Mountbatten. Five months later, on 10 July 1947, the engagement of Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten and the 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth was announced. Shortly before their marriage on 20 November 1947, King George VI named his future son-in-law Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich with the style of His Royal Highness, and he was appointed to the Order of the Garter. On the King’s death in 1952, Princess Elizabeth acceded to the throne as Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, the Duke has undertaken countless public duties, accompanying The Queen on all her Commonwealth Tours and State Visits overseas, and acting as Patron or President of some 800 organisations.

The Prince of Wales to Visit the USA

The Prince of Wales to visit the United States of America

7th April 2011
The British Government has asked The Prince of Wales to pay a short official visit to the United States from 3rd May to 5th May.

During the visit to Washington DC His Royal Highness will call on President Obama at the White House.

The programme in Washington DC will also include The Prince giving the keynote speech at a conference on sustainable agriculture at Georgetown University and attending an event to support British and American Armed Forces deployed overseas.

Notes to Editors

The Prince of Wales last visited the United States in January 2007 when, accompanied by The Duchess of Cornwall, he attended engagements in Philadelphia and New York. That visit followed on from Their Royal Highnesses’ Autumn Tour to the country in November 2005, when they spent time in New York, Washington DC, New Orleans and San Francisco.

A Royal Marathoner

I have only ever participated in one full marathon. This was the Athens Classic Marathon on 31st October 2010. A few weeks before the Athens Marathon I participated in a half marathon in Henley, UK.

Based on his experience on 42.195 km track in Greece, he would never recommend this race to beginners.

I ran the Athens Marathon in 4 hours and 39 minutes. I was hoping to run it much faster but I was not prepared for how difficult it was! The Athens marathon is challenging course as a lot of it is uphill, and it was hot. I was so happy, and lucky, that I finished. I would not recommend the Athens Marathon for any first time marathon runners. I ran the Henley Half Marathon in 1:48, I was happy with that result. One day I will run a full marathon in 3:30!  The older of twin brothers said.

Athletics is not the only sport that Prince is practising.

I do enjoy many other sports. I love snowboarding, surfing, swimming and tennis. I also love playing pool, though I don’t know if you can call it a sport.

The Prince reveals how often does he work out and describing his trainings?

I regularly workout, maybe three or four times a week. I vary my training routines as much as possible. I do lots of free weights, core exercises, cardio, interval training and more. I like to keep my body guessing, I find this strategy very effective and efficient.

What are you expectations for the 24th Belgrade Marathon and how do you will to run on the streets of Belgrade?

I just hope I will get through the course! But I am very much looking forward to running through the streets of Belgrade with our citizens and friends from all around the world. I would like to wish everyone participating the very best of luck, concluded Prince Philip, probably the only Royal participant who will run 21.1 km track on April 17.

Can the Aunt-Heap Find a Rebirth

What greater testament to a happy childhood could there be than wanting to raise your family in the home where you grew up? Kensington Palace, the 17th-century royal residence surrounded by Kensington Gardens, is where Prince William was brought up, and where, it is rumoured, he plans to return with his wife once his stint as a search-and-rescue rescue helicopter pilot at RAF Valley in Anglesey has been completed.
The palace was once home to five successive monarchs and the birthplace of Queen Victoria; in the Sixties Princess Margaret transformed it into the hub of swinging London, where the likes of the Rolling Stones and Peter Sellers would attend A-list parties.

More recently, the palace has become the sentimental focus for visitors who come to dwell on the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, leaving flowers at the gates on the anniversary, August 31.

Heartfelt though those gestures may be, they have tended to draw attention away from the fact that this is where Charles and Diana brought up their sons, William and Harry, hearty, energetic boys who burnt off their energy racing through the corridors and playing in the gardens. “It would be lovely if William and Kate were to return and continue the story,” says Lucy Worsley, chief curator at Historic Royal Palaces and author of Courtiers, The Secret History of Kensington Palace.

“The palace is split between the public areas and the royal household – although there is a big underground conduit between the two – but even if she is discreetly concealed behind high walls, the idea of a new Princess in residence would be fabulous.”

Kate and Camilla – A Mutually Beneficial Friendship!

“Kate’s a lovely girl,” gushed her future mother-in-law last week in London. “We’re very lucky.” Surprisingly, it is Camilla, duchess of Cornwall, 63, who has become the closest royal adviser and mentor as Kate Middleton, 29, navigates the treacherous route from commoner to future queen, a path Camilla Parker Bowles traversed mostly solo when she married Prince Charles in 2005. They are increasingly seen out and about enjoying each other’s company. For instance, Camilla and Charles recently took Middleton to see the Royal Ballet’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

It isn’t just Camilla who is chummy with Middleton, but also most of her family from her first marriage. In February, Camilla, with her daughter Laura Lopes, took Middleton and her younger sister Pippa to a high-profile lunch at the exclusive restaurant Koffman’s that marked the end of months of palatial purdah for William’s fiancée. The four women laughed, chatted and ate for more than 2½ hours, ignoring all around them straining to listen. At one point Camilla could be heard saying tantalizingly, “If I can give you one bit of advice…”

The Growing Royal Scandal in Belgium Surrounding Prince Laurent

(Reuters) - Belgium's Prince Laurent has faced rare criticism from the king over an unauthorized trip to Congo last month that has led some lawmakers to say the errant son should lose his state allowance.
The palace confirmed Tuesday reports that King Albert, 76, was angry about his youngest son's visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, a former Belgian colony, which the government and the monarch had advised against.

The 47-year-old prince, 12th in line to the throne, travelled to Congo for a week in mid-March, officially to study deforestation. During his trip, he was greeted by Congolese President Laurent Kabila.
Belgian has strained ties with Congo, which was the personal fiefdom of King Leopold II in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and was ruled over by Belgium until independence in 1960. During the colonial era the country was stripped of mineral wealth and tens of thousands of people died in indentured slavery.

Belgian caretaker Prime Minister Yves Leterme told parliament last week he planned to remind the prince of his duties, raising the possibility that Laurent could lose his tax-free 300,000 euro ($425,500) annual royal stipend.

Diane Von Furstenberg sat down with the Telegraph, and British newspaper plus esteemed designer equals questions about Kate Middleton's style, of course. DVF remarked that dear Catherine has "always" worn her clothes and that the future princess' wardrobe -- not too edgy -- is spot-on: "She's going to be Queen of England, but she's not from an aristocratic background, so she needs to play the game. Still, I like the fact that she seems to be very independent."
So who should make The Dress, according to Von Furstenberg? Interesting you should ask, so did the Telegraph. She responded:
"I think she should go for Alexander McQueen. But you know what? She reminds me more and more of Diana. Everything about her. I think she's there to avenge Diana's memory -- that's clearly what William wants. Giving Kate his mother's ring was a great gesture, and I think that theirs will be a happy version of his parents' marriage. But he absolutely chose a woman who was like his mother -- that was deliberate."
