Historic Diamond Sells for $9.7 million

GENEVA (AP) — Marie de Medici wore it at her coronation asQueen Consort of Henry IV in France in 1610, and now the Beau Sancy diamond is a lavish accessory owned by an anonymous bidder who paid $9.7 million for it at Sotheby's auction.
The spring auction season for jewelry and watches is upon Geneva, where elegant lakefront hotels fill with well-heeled buyers and bidders in a scene far removed from the debate over European austerity.
Five bidders fueled the price on Tuesday at the Sotheby's sale for the Beau Sancy, a 34.98 carat diamond that had passed among the royal families in France, England, Prussia and the Netherlands. It was sold by the Royal House of Prussia, the line of descendants that once ruled Prussia.
Another historical item, the Murat Tiara, sold for $3.87 million. The pearl-and-diamond tiara was created for the marriage of a prince whose ancestors included the husband of Caroline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister.
A diamond brooch known as the "Bonnie Prince Charlie" sold for $968,085. The brooch features a yellow diamond once owned by Charles Edward Stuart, whose attempt to regain the British crown led to the Battle of Culloden in 1745.
At a Christie's auction Monday to benefit 32 charities favored by the Lily Safra Foundation, Safra's donated jewelry fetched nearly $38 million in sales — almost double what was expected.

Funeral of Count Carl Johan Bernadotte af Wisborg

At Bastad, Sweden, the funeral of Count Carl Johan Bernadotte af Wisborg, last great-grandson of Queen Victoria, was attended by a bevy of his royal relations.

The late Carl Johan was the last uncle of King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden, as well as of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Queen Anne Marie of the Hellenes and Fürstin Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.

Among those present to wish the late Count Carl Johan Godspeed, were: King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden, Prince Carl Philip and his aunt Princess Desirée of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II and Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark, Queen Anne Marie of the Hellenes, and Fürstin Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.

Carl Johan was the son of King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden (1882-1973) and of his first wife, the former Princess Margaret of Connaught (1882-1920). He was born a Prince of Sweden but renounced his titles to marry a commoner.

Until his death, he also held the "monicker" of oldest living descendant of Queen Victoria. That revered position now passes to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who is about to turn 91 years old.

La Veuve Sozzani...

An excellent piece my Marlene Koenig...

Donna Emanuela de Dampierre, the first wife of HRH Don Jaime, Duke of Segovia, second son of King Alfonso XIII, died on May 2 at her home in Rome.  She was born in Rome and she died in Rome.  Her first marriage took place in Rome. Her civil divorce from her first husband was recognized in Italy.  Her second husband was a wealthy Italian stockbroker.  He died in Italy.  Her long time lover, Federico Astarita, was an Italian lawyer, who died in 1974.

Although Emanuela and her second husband, Antonio "Tonini" Sozanni were separated for many years, they never got a divorce.  Sozanni, who supported Emanuela and her sons, died in 2007.  He was survived by his widow, Emanuela.

Emanuela, who was 98 when she died, was the daughter of a French viscount, Roger, Viscount de Dampierre, who had inherited a papal title, Duke of San Lorenzo.  He was married to Donna Vittoria Ruspoli, whose mother was American.   Emanuela's parents were divorced in 1930, and her father was the center of a scandal in Rome when he ran off with a much younger woman.

The French newspaper, Le Figaro, included a death notice, most like placed by Emanuela's grandson, Luis Alfonso de Borbon y Bordiu, who is considered by Legitimists as the rightful King of France.

Death notices are not always accurate as the information is provided by the family.   Emanuele is named as the widow of Don Jaime, Duke of Segovia.  The death notice also stated that she was the mother of HRH Don Alfonso, Duke of Cadiz (1936-1989), the grandmother of Don Luis Alfonso and the great-grandmother of  Eugenia, Luis and Alfonso de Borbon.
