WIED: Fürst Carl zu Wied (1961-2015)

Carl, the Head of the mediatized dynasty of Wied, passed away at Neuwied on 12 March 2015.

Born at Neuwied, the family seat, in 1961, Carl was the second son of the Fürst of Wied, Friedrich Wilhelm (1931-2000), and of his first wife, the former Princess Guda of Waldeck und Pyrmont. (b. 1932). After his birth, there were no more children born to the princely couple. Carl's parents divorced in 1962. Fürst Friedrich Wilhelm remarried in 1967, his second wife being the former Countess Sophie Charlotte of Stolberg-Wernigerode (b. 1943), who survives him. With his second wife, Friedrich Wilhelm had two more children: Christina (b. 1970) and Wolff-Heinrich (b. 1979). Princess Guda married secondly to Dr. Horst Dierkes, by whom she had two further children: Vicco and Christian.

Fürst Friedrich Wilhelm passed away in 2000. Six weeks after his death, his eldest son, Alexander, who remains unmarried, renounced his rights of succession as Fürst zu Wied. Friedrich Wilhelm was then succeeded by his son Prince Carl, who two years earlier had married Princess Isabelle of Isenburg. The wedding took place at Birstein, the Isenburg family seat. In due time, Carl and Isabelle became the parents of four children: Maximilian (b. 1999), who succeeds his father, Friedrich (b. 2001), Marie Elisabeth (b./d. 2003) and Anastasia (b. 2004). All children were born at Neuwied. Fürstin Isabelle is the eldest sister of Archduchess Katharina of Austria and of Princess Sophie of Prussia. Their two brothers married commoners.

Neuwied is a vibrant small city on the Rhine. Fürst Carl played an important role in the area's economic and cultural life. From political figures to regular folk, all have expressed their sadness at his untimely passing.

His funeral, held at Neuwied's Marktkirche on 20 March 2015, was attended by a bevy of German royalty and aristocracy, many of them with long-standing links to the princely family of Wied.

May He rest in Peace ...

SPAIN: King Juan Carlos in Washington DC

King Juan Carlos is Spain’s best king since Carlos III of the eighteenth century and one of the most consequential statesmen of the twentieth century. He is overlooked in the United States because Spain’s success is taken for granted and because his life has been chronicled in Spanish. He is far more appreciated in Latin America than in the United States. His reign tinged with sacrifice and tragedy, he succeeded General Francisco Franco, orchestrated Spain’s transition to democracy, faced down a major coup attempt in 1981, drove Spain’s full return to the West, and built bridges to Latin America and the Middle East.
With his active support, Spain became largely prosperous, a net provider of security as a member of NATO, and even became a significant donor of foreign aid. Spain’s transition to democracy is seen as the “textbook” case. The historic transition placed far higher responsibilities on Juan Carlos than almost any other twentieth-century European monarch.

EUROHISTORY: William Mead Lalor Collection Acquired by the Eurohistory Archive!

The royal photographic collection painstakingly put together by the late William Mead Lalor, author of three excellent books on European Royalty (Royalty Before the Wars, Royalty Between the Wars and Royalty After the Wars), was recently acquired by the EUROHISTORY Royal Photography Archive. All Mr. Lalor's books were published by Rosvall Royal Books in Sweden.

Bill, as we all called Mr. Lalor, was a royalty enthusiast, perhaps among the most devoted of us. He spent decades putting together this collection and saving for posterity rare images of European royalty between 1860-2010. Added to the already massive archive built by Mr. Beeche at EUROHISTORY, this acquisition easily makes the archive one of the largest royal photo archives in existence.

In an effort to pay tribute to Bill, every time we use an image from his collection, we will source its provenance. We hope that from wherever dear Bill is today, he will be satisfied that his legacy will remain intact!

This acquisition would have been impossible to achieve without the support and financing provided by Mr. Beéche and a selfless donor who believes in "the cause," just as much as our founder!

"Our friend, who has helped keep the flame alive, is owed a great debt of gratitude, but in keeping with his selflessness and low-key approach to the good he does, he wants to remain anonymous," Mr. Beéche, EUROHISTORY's founder, said when asked about the co-donor's identity.

Appreciation is also expressed to Mr. Lalor's children and his estate, for a successful negotiation that was amenable to all parties involved!

Transfer to EUROHISTORY of the Lalor Collection began last month and will conclude soon, as it is a sizable shipment. Once completed, cataloguing will commence and the Lalor Collection will occupy it's own wall in the recently renovated offices of EUROHISTORY.
