UK: Trooping the Colour

HM The Queen's official birthday celebration took place today in London. Known as "Trooping the Colour," the ceremony always ends with the bulk of the royal family waving to the crowds gathered below the balcony at Buckingham Palace.

To everyone's delight, this was Prince George of Cambridge's first appearance on the balcony and the crowd responded to his wave with clear joy!

Spain: The Deed is Done – No More Dukes of Palma de Mallorca!

It is official!

HM King don Felipe VI of Spain has stripped his sister the Infanta doña Cristina of the title of Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, which was granted to her at the time of her marriage (1997) to Iñaki Urdangarín. The wedding was celebrated with incredible pomp and circumstance in Barcelona, a city that has always had an important place in the beleaguered Infanta's heart!

This situation, which I am sure is extremely difficult for all involved, was brought about by the legal problems faced by Mr Urdangarín, who is accused of "exploiting his royal connections to win contracts and embezzle millions in public funds along with a former business partner." Doña Cristina, who was a member of the board of directors of the NOOS Foundation, is being accused of "two counts of being an accomplice to tax fraud."

On the one hand one must accept that all are equal under the law and the King cannot possibly cover for his brother-in-law's missteps. Doing so would be extremely detrimental to the image and integrity of the Crown for the institution above all must survive.

One hopes that these charges will eventually be proven false, although matters do  not seem to be going that way, which is terribly sad for the Infanta, her husband and their children. Surely, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía must be equally upset and concerned by the entire fiasco!

Spain: King Felipe VI Revokes Sister's Ducal Title

Newspaper in Spain are announcing the news that apparently came from Zarzuela Palace – HRH the Infanta doña Cristina can no longer use the title of "Duchess of Palma de Mallorca." This also prevents her husband Iñaki Urdangarín from using the courtesy title of "Duke of Palma de Mallorca."

This is yet another low point for the couple, whose financial affairs have raised much criticism in Spain and landed them in court accused of abuse of power, influence peddling and misappropriation of funds.

This is serious business that can end by sending both Iñaki and Cristina to jail ... I find the entire mess simply heartbreaking and wish that the judicial process cleans their names. I cannot possibly imagine why someone in their position would do such a thing...

Hannover: Two Deaths in Quick Succession

It is with sadness that the Royal Family of Hannover announced the deaths the dynasty's two oldest members.

On June 1 HRH Princess Alexandra of Hannover (née Ysenburg-Büdingen) passed away. She was the widow of Prince Welf Heinrich of Hannover, an uncle of the current Head of House, Prince Ernst August.

She was born in Frankfurt in 1937, the only daughter of Fürst Otto zu Ysenburg-Büdingen (1904-1990) and of his wife Princess Felizitas Reuß (1914-1989). Alexandra had four brothers, all married with descendants.

Princess Alexandra and Prince Welf-Heinrich were childless.

Then, three days later HRH Princess Monika of Hannover (née Solms-Laubach), stepmother of the current Head of House, Prince Ernst August, passed away.

Princess Monika, second wife of Prince Ernst August's father, also another Ernst August (1914-1987), was childless as well. She was born in Laubach in 1929 and married in 1981.

Princess Monika's parents were Count Georg Friedrich zu Solms-Laubach and his wife Princess Johanna of Solms-Hohensolms-Lich. She was the fourth of the couple's seven children, who included: Irene, wife of Fürst Siegfried of Castell-Rüdenhausen; and Otto, who married Princess Madeleine of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (a sister-in-law of Princess Benedikte of Denmark). One of Princess Monika's brothers, Karl, was killed in action in early 1945.
