In a letter written in 1948, two weeks after the birth of the Prince of Wales, the then Princess Elizabeth expresses her relief at hiring: “A proper nanny, who are so difficult to find nowadays!”
In the note to her second cousin, Lady Mary Cambridge, she adds: “I had no idea that one could be kept so busy in bed – there seems to be something happening all the time!
“The baby is very sweet, and Philip and I are enormously proud of him. I still find it hard to believe that I really have a baby of my own!”
The letter, which is signed Lillibet, is part of a collection of royal letters being auctioned on April 3 at a hotel near Heathrow Airport by International Autograph Auctions.
The Queen sent another letter to the same cousin in 1960, following the birth of the Duke of York, saying: “The baby is adorable, and is very good, and putting on weight well.
