Visiting the Scottish coastal town of 17,000, or the University with its 7,700 students,  you would not immediately think of St. Andrews as the backdrop for red  hot romance. The medieval city is bleak, gray, cold and rainy. At the Royal  and Ancient Golf Club, golfers hang onto their hats in the chilly wind  and try to avoid hitting balls into the open sea. The buildings are old,  gray and distinguished. Founded in 1413, St. Andrews is Scotland's most  ancient university, with the slogan: "From first to foremost."
Nowadays St. Andrews is a research university with high rankings,  including top-of-the-chart scores for student satisfaction. No wonder  the English gentry go there to study and find their spouses. It was a  natural choice for Prince William, in part because its remoteness made  it easier to protect him. The bright daughter of an ambitious business  couple, Kate Middleton also gravitated there. Nearly the same age, both entered in 2001.
