Carl Philip, Prince of Sweden and Duke of Värmland, was born on 13 May 1979 at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. He was christened in the Royal Chapel on 31 August 1979, and was named Carl Philip Edmund Bertil.
His godparents were Price Bertil, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Princess Birgitta and Prince Leopold of Bayern.
Prince Carl Philip is The King and Queen's second oldest child. In accordance with the 1979 Act of Succession, which took effect on 1 January 1980, Prince Carl Philip is third in line to the throne after Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Estelle.

Education

Prince Carl Philip began preschool in Västerled in 1984. In autumn 1986, he started primary school at Smedslätt School in Bromma.
He completed his intermediate level education at Ålsten School in Bromma, and began his lower secondary education at Enskilda Upper Secondary School in Stockholm in autumn 1992.
In autumn 1994, The Prince began two years at Kent School, a private school in Connecticut, USA. The Prince studied the upper secondary level science programme at Lundsberg School, graduating in spring 1999.

Reservist in the Swedish Navy

The Prince completed his military service at the Amf 1 Amphibious Regiment in Vaxholm. He trained as a coxswain (Combat Boat 90). In 2001 and 2002, The Prince carried out his officer's training in the Swedish Navy.
During his training, he completed a voyage with the mine layer HMS Carlskrona. Prince Carl Philip graduated as a Second Lieutenant in December 2002. The Prince was appointed Captain in Stockholm in December 2007, and was appointed Major on 1 October 2014.

Forestry and agriculture

Prince Carl Philip studied agriculture and forestry in autumn 2008, and carried out work experience at Stenhammar Estate. The Prince studied at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp from 2009 until January 2012, when he completed his degree in agriculture.

Patronage

The Prince is patron of organisations including the Lilla Barnets Fond children's fund, which supports medical research and the development of care for new-born babies in Sweden, the Volvo Ocean Race and the Swedish Rural Economy and Agricultural Societies.

Engagement and marriage

Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist's engagement was announced on 27 June 2014. The wedding will take place on 13 June 2015 in the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace of Stockholm.
